Morning all.

Has anyone else noticed the Google toolbar not displaying PR scores on sites that come up in back link results?

I noticed it several days ago when checking client sites. At first I thought it was my toolbar, so I reinstalled. Still wasn't showing.

I've checked on all types of sites, even experimented on searchenginewatch.com -backlinked using the google tool bar, and checked the first 20 results. No green bars in site.

Interesting........

If I'm understanding you and looking at it the same way, it looks ok to me.

Maybe you're in the Twilight Zone too!

When I went to my highrankings.com directly, it had a PR6. When I found it through a search result, and clicked it, no PR.

Is this what you are seeing?

Totally ;)

Hi Debra,

The searchenginewatch.com test you did produced the same results for me - all backlinks grayed out. When I copied one of the backlink URLs I had clicked on, closed the browser and then opened browser again, pasted the URL I had copied and hit Go, the PR bar worked again.

Just goes to show you that you can't always depend on the Google PR bar.

LOL guess not!

Jill - I'm not seeing any green when I backlink a site. I see green when I land on the main URL, but when I hit the backlink button on the google toolbar and try to check the PR of sites linking to it - nada.

Like I said, I've reinstalled my bar too so I don't think that's it.

Weird. Maybe an omen eh?

Maybe they're doing this on purpose. So people can't easily check the PR of sites they may want to link to? Thus making them use their own brains to decide?

Debra, have you checked the help section for the toolbar? I'm sure this has been mentioned somewhere before, but they warn about potential problems if you're using a firewall or a proxy server:

If you are behind a proxy web server or a firewall, it may be interfering with the Toolbar's requests to extract PageRank information from Google. Try out one of our experimental features, designed to fix this problem. Click on the Google logo, and from the drop-down menu select (or press the Options button) to access Options. Select the More tab in the Options window then check the box next to the option Fix PageRank through proxies (experimental). Alternatively, you can disable the Advanced Features entirely on the Google Toolbar. To do so, click on the Google logo, and from the drop-down menu select Help > Privacy Information. Uncheck the boxes listed under Advanced Features.

I saw this early in the morning as well. My sites came up as 'Greyed'...but after a quick change of underwear and a check to see that MSN and Google also had the grey kiss of death, I recovered enough to go catch a movie.

By the time I got back from the movie, the PR was functioning again. Thus, my new philosophy whenever something goes wrong is to simply catch a flick.

Debra

Has that problem sorted itself out now, or is something we still need to look out for??

I did go into the tool bar Options as Bob ( Qwerty) suggested, but ended up un-checking my pop-up blocker after the suggestions failed to show a change. And it worked. My toolbar is back to "normal".

Seems that's the problem on my machine. I went and changed it back to blocking pop-ups and sure enough, my toolbar went gray again.

Odd ...... I've been using the toolbar with the pop-up blocker option checked and never had a problem before.

All's well that ends well.
