Hey all –

Wondering if anyone has any tips and tricks on how to optimize for search engines using a CMS system? I know some of the systems are pretty clunky and make it hard to optimize right out of the gate.

Suggestions?

Thanks!
Ann

Welcome, Ann. bye1.gif

The first thing to check is to see if search engines are spidering your content. If so, you're on the right track. The next trick is to see if the CMS program serves unique title tags. If not, that's worth correcting. At a minimum, it would be nice if they'd serve the page headings as title tags too, but a little more control could come in handy. Those are the biggies in my book. There are certainly more things that could be done with the formatting of your pages, but the above steps alone would take you from invisible to relatively easy to find.

The only thing I have to add to Ed's advice is to make sure the CMS system you choose is not requiring either Cookies or Session ID's in order to surf the site. Most these days don't, but there are still some out there where SID's and Cookies are a requirement.

CMS systems, or really dynamic sites in general, are usually pretty easy to optimize and maintain. As long as you make sure to cross a few t's and dot a few i's.

Hi, check out ocPortal. There is a review on my website... I use this and invision powerboard....

I use url mod-rewrite so forum addresses look like this url/forum/advanced-photoshop...

ocportal comes se friendly out of the box with valid xhtml, on board mod-rewrite, and page specific titles for all major category types eg: news, tutorials, etc.

hope that helps
