[I've moved all of the latest round of "missing from Google" threads here. Moderators, please merge any new ones here, as well. - Jill]

Has anyone experienced a major change in their site's positioning in Google in the past week? A client of mine has a site that was in the sandbox for a couple of months due to a domain switch and then it started ranking very well for his keywords. Then yesterday he noticed all the new ranking magically disappeared and when I did a search to be sure the site wasn't banned, I saw the exact same number of pages listed in Google as before we got the better ranking.

The only thing we've been doing is some active reciprical linking, no on-page optimization. I'm worried that a couple of sites we linked to may have caused Google to move us back to our sandbox status. We're removing any questionable links (we're being overly cautious - we tried to only put topical links on the site).

Your thoughts? Thanks!

Jackie D.

Jackie, that's perfectly normal with Google. My advice is not to check it so closely. Those rankings will be back in time. It could be a few weeks or even more, however.

Thanks, Jill. I feel (marginally) better knowing that it's normal.

I know that Google fluctuates often, but did anyone notice anything yesterday (Feb. 3rd)? I had a few of my sites, different topics, pretty much fall out of the rankings. Half my search terms I no longer rank, and the other half suddenly dropped about 50 positions. Again, this happened for a few unrelated sites (one is boots, one is charms). The other sites in the rankings look about the same, so i'm thinking it's just my sites that have suddenly fallen. My backlinks are down a bit, PR is the same at 5, so i'm not sure what's going on. If I search for: site:www.mysitename.com inurl:www.mysitename.com it comes up with hundreds of listings, so at least i'm still indexed...

Are you using a automated rank checking program? I've had days when some major rankings would completely disappear. When I went to Google to check myself, though, there they were, right where they were supposed to be.

I did use an automated program but also then checked manually and i'm definately WAY down. I haven't done anything different to my site, and the rest of the rankings, at least top 25 or so, look roughly the same. I can't figure out why i suddenly dropped from around the top 10 to #87

You can find other reports like that on here. Google's just like that. I have one particular keyword where I pop into the top 10 one day, and then go away from weeks on end. I wouldn't worry about it too much right now until it's been a few weeks (or you know of something specific you did that you suspect caused it). Google's just like that.

Thanks. I definately didn't do anything (as far as I know), since the only thing i've changed on my site recently is a little contect here and there. I've been in the top 10 for several straight months now so hopefully this is just a temporary thing. It worries me though that one of my other sites, which is a completley different topic than my main site, also got 'demoted' yesterday. I was in top 10 or 20 for several different search terms, now i'm out of top 100. The 2 sites are linked so if one was demoted for a particular reason maybe the other followed due to the link? Or something like that...

Hi All,

On the same lines, my client was moved to page 11 from the first page. We reoptimized the site and added to the inbound links. The site was back on the first page for two days, then moved to "sand-box" yesterday morning. By the afternoon, it came back to the first page to be moved once again in the evening.

Can anyone tell me what's going on???

Ali

Welcome Ali! bye1.gif

Nothing is going on, that's just the normal course of events at Google. My advice would be to not check it so often because in this case, what you don't know (and can't control) really won't hurt you.

So, what do you suggest I should do to get him to the first page again?

Thanks,

Ali

I'd start by reading the Tips for Newbies articles and see if you've missed anything there.

When you're done with those, you should next read the Link Building Articles and strategize a creative link building campaign.

Then, I'd put a lot of time and work into implementing everything and hope for the best. I would also tell the client that it's normal to be in the top-10 sometimes and other times not, and that if they want a permanent place, they should purchase ads at Google and Overture.

Good luck!

Jill

Hi,
One of my sites (www.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk) has suddenly dissapeared from Google. I have not used any spam techniques and the site has been No1 for "Mobile Disco Directory" on Google for 2 years now. It seems to have just dissapeared for 2 days now.

I have entered site:www.mobilediscodirectory.co.uk in Google and it does list all my pages. The site is still getting spidered but for some reason it does not appear in any search results anymore. cry_smile.gif

Can anyone advise what may have happened.

Many thanks,

Richie

Hello

I am having the same problem.

I was just going thru with the sites which I link to. I found 1 site which had more than 400 links his links pages.

I have now deleted the link to him. I was wondering if that was the reason why google has penalized me ?

Is there a tool which shows how many links there are on each page.

Best regards.
Henrik
