I hope these forums are open to folks like myself. I am not a professional web developer and will have some basic questions. All I am trying to do is make our website the best I can. That being said...

What exactly is this "text link" I see in many posts? I think I understand the concept of having incoming links from other websites (how to get them is another question). Then maybe I don't. Does a text link have something to do with anchors on pages (ie for an item in our retail store? If so, how important are these?

the link text is the actual text the visitor will click on

<a tag > link text </a tag>

this is very important

the link text should be keyword rich for the destination page

meaning if you are on a page about cat and want to link to a page about bird your page is optimized for cat but the link text will be bird to give weight to the link to the bird page

Hi Don. Welcome  And yes, you don't have to be a pro to come here. Everybody's welcome.

A text link is, basically, a link that's all text, rather than one that uses an image. For example, <a href="http://www.domain.co...page.html">Wine Lover's Supplies</a> would be a text link, the anchor text of which would be "Wine Lover's Supplies". That anchor text tells a search engine that crawls through the page containing the link that the person who put up the page wants people to know that the page being linked to is about wine lover's supplies, so it will help that page to rank better on a search for that term.

Welcome, Don1!

Are you asking specifically what are the text links IN the posts on this forum? Or just what are text links in general?

On this forum, the links at the bottom of some people's posts are just a little advertisement, if you will, for their services. Anyone can create one by going into their user controls link at the top of the forum.

The general text link. I think I got the answer above. The next question would be, is it important where the link lands on a page or does it just need to land on a relevant page with the term in the meta tags or title or description?

Unless we're talking about a link that points to a particular bookmark on a given page, it's going to land at the beginning of the page by default.

Now, if you're optimizing a page for a given keyword phrase, you'll want the anchor text of the link pointing to the page to contain (or optimally, to be) the phrase. It should also appear in the page title, the header, and should be sprinkled liberally through the on-page content.

That's how you tell a search engine's spider that this is what your page is about, so that when someone searches on that phrase, the engine will know to point to your page.

there are a few different types of links

text link refers to a link which has words in it (ie: click here people can also use images or preformatted pretty text to create links

the reason the text link is so valuable is that (if created correctly) it directly states its purpose at a glance to both search engine spiders and web users

the reason images as links are not as valuable is that it is easy to place long strings of spam in alt tags

the purpose of these alt tags is to tell blind people what the image is, but since many people used them to spam search engines they carry little weight compared with a text link
