Andrew Goodman has written up this session for SearchDay today.

I'd like to actually dispute some of what Andrew wrote:

QUOTE
Those familiar to forum debates on these matters will know that Whalen has sometimes chosen not to address certain details of critics' arguments, but also that she has never wavered from her stance that webmasters should follow the search engines' rules and not try deceptive tactics.

I'm happy to address any detail of any critics argument and have never shied away from any of them. Please bring them on!

Also, I've never ever said anything about following the search engines rules. I've not even read the search engine rules, because there's no reason to read them. They have nothing to do with my job of making sites be the best they can be for the search engines and users.

Ahhh...now I feel better!

I always rather thought that given the limited time and opportunity in those 'discussions', there's only so many points you can address.

The thinking inside a head is always more significant than the hat atop it.

Finally just read the whole article of Andrew's. Seemed he had something nasty to say about all of us on the panel! Wow. What an interesting take on that session.

I noticed that, but wasn't sure why!

yeah, he didn't seem to state what made the other panelists worthy of his vote...

guess he just doesn't like either of you.

I thought it was a movie joke, or a joke on the morals and ethics of Californian Governors.

But what do I know? I still don't get how Arnie, with the Third Reich Accent, always played All-American heores.

I liked that article. It satrted with good bits and decended into strongly worded critique. Mr Goodman is surely going to generate some good publicity with that tact.

Also, can i ask where these Serach Engine "rules" can be found? Never saw the word rule used by google, or yahoo, or MSN or Ask. Am I wrong? Should I move my comments to the impending Semantics forum? wink.gif

I really am serious about that last point. I think Jill, in particular, has an unearned reputation, promoted by certain people trying to make a reputation, of advocating following the rules.

As there are no rules, this simply isn't possible. How can one advocate following something what doesn't exist? It isn't possible.

As in everything, it is not the mouth it comes out of, but the head it goes into that makes a memory.

ROFL! Michael. Very good!

I do believe Andrew was probably talking about Google's "guidelines" not rules. Either way, I don't follow them. (Well I might, but I don't read them, so I don't know if I do, and quite frankly, don't care!)

personally I liked the article.

he seemed to treat pretty much everyone with the same amount of disdain.

most other seo forums are too intense. we all need a little humor.

Disdain is good, Yah? I liked it too. We have all heard the old arguments, and this reporting put the spotlight on the question left, rather than any "answers". These sorts of articles are suppossed to provoke thought, and the commetns Andrew made certainly did that for me.
