Many of the sites on that list were third rate search properties. some of which even link to LinksToYou...those lists are only valuable if they contain directories that provide static links or directories that get a buch of traffic.

sorting through those types of lists is generally a big waste of time...

If they waste time you can be spending on improving your site then there is the first cost.

The second cost is that some of them do require payment.

The third cost is that some of them are in link farm networks and require reciprocal links to list your site. This could get you banned from search engines.

I am not saying bad stuff about all of those directories, just some of them. specifically i remember glancing at a few and seeing links to the linkstoyou link farm program

Yeah I just didn't link to any of the sites that asked for reciprical links, but a lot of them have already added me for free so I felt it was worth it but no biggie....

a good thing to do is search say for something like this

"kansas web design add url" or suggest url or add link, this helps if you are trying to get into a specific catagory by showing a lot of sites that are realted to your subject and offer you to add your url....

I was just pointing out a few specific directories in a huge list. If you go through one of those lists entirely and see stuff like LinksToYou (which I did when I glanced at just a few sites) then you know that some of the items on the list are garbage.

Part of what I am trying to do is SLOWLY create a decent directory of directories providing static links from pages that get indexed (no link farms). Some people are very liberal in what they call a directory and much of the time spent registering sites can provide 0 return. Some of the link backs can hurt as well.

Also directories contain lists of sites...that is what they do. If they all require linkbacks then that might mess with the structure of the normal site that is just trying to get listings in a few of them...

I just looked at the condensed list you created which includes "xxxx." I have never ever heard of xxxx so I went to the site. This was the first example I went to checkout.

I do not believe they provide static links. Right on the home page it is not readily apparent where their directory is, but they do have a link offering "NEW! Add your site to 1550+ search engines !"

this is the type of garbage I am talking about.

Hi Awall19,

I did not condence the list. I simply copied and pasted it from the supplied URL . I did not intend to convey all the listed directories were worth the effort, but rather some are worth while. Hope that clarifies it a bit.

The ones I love are the directories that let you put in all the submission information and submit it then tell you they will not accept it until you provide a link to them. It always brings a few choice words out of me.

So where should I start out in all this mess.

Most of the free sites are now going pay. The list seems to get shorter and shorter. Any have a list of free sites that are worth posting on? If I am gonna pay, then where should I start.

Thanks for all yor help. This forum rocks
