Here's the story:

I have spent the last two months adding links to company web site, from directories all over the world.

When I check the Google toolbar to see the backward links of who is linking to me, it shows very few.

However, if I go to Google and search for the name of the company, the SERP reveals at least ten pages worth of directory links to the site.

When does Google add all of these links to improve the PageRank?

Confused :applause:

The theory for a long time was that when you ran a link: search, Google would only display those pages linking to you which had a PR of 4 or higher.

About a month or two ago, we found out that that's not quite true (if it ever was). They do display some lower-PR links, but not all of them. I don't know what the actual criterion is, but they definitely leave some pages out of such a search.

If you want to find out who links to what, without concern for how Google treats things, you can try doing the same search on AllTheWeb.

My own view is that the Toolbar shows historical data, sometimes quite old, that may or may not reflect what is being used in the Google algorithm today. You only need to check web pages that have been just added to the website. They often get quite high in the SERP's but are not PageRanked by Google.

Hello,
I accept to Mr Qwerty's theory very much. He has understood google more than others. And as he said only alltheweb.com reveals who are really linking to us. Try using linkpopularitycheck tool from trellian.com. It compares the results with google, hotbot, alltheweb etc.
thanks,
VIJAY.
