I'm building a website for a client using PHP. All pages, including the main landing page, have variable content based on current date, etc. and therefore I don't currently have a fixed 'index.html' file to serve as the default entry point for visitors, spiders, etc. I really don't want to have a splash page or a re-direct, but those seem like the only answer. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Hi Stuart. Welcome to the HR forums!
You'll be just fine with an index.php instead of an index.htm file, assuming your server is configured properly. All of my sites are php-based and there are no problems at all getting those indexed.
The only things to be careful about are that you're not requiring either Cookies or Session ID's. Those two things will stop a spider dead in its tracks, but you shouldn't need to do that just to deliver content based on the current date.

Randy,
Thanks for the quick response. I was hoping that using an 'index.php' file would be a workable option, but testing with the web server on my development machine wasn't successful. Obviously I've got a switch thrown incorrectly for my IIS config(or someplace else). I'll test this out on the production server!
Cheers,
Stuart

Stuart, this forum uses an index.php file and it's fine. It can be served up both as index.php, or the regular domain name www.highrankings.com/forum
