Our company site was recently added to Dmoz (3 weeks ago) but we do not appear in the Google directory. How often does Google refresh the listing from DMOZ?

I don't have any recent submissions Carbon14, so hopefully someone else will post something more recent. But in the past I've seen this one all over the place. One site would get into DMOZ and show up in the Google Directory a week later. Another would get into DMOZ and not be added to the Google Directory for 3 months.

I think it all depends upon how lucky you you get with the update schedule. That used to be every 2-3 months in my experience, but so much has changed with Google since then that I'd hate to rely on old data.

Anybody with a recent submission?

It can take a very long time before Google updates their version of the dmoz directory. There is no set schedule that I know of.

Hello Jill,
Thanks for this answer. Even I was waiting for this answer for a very long time. I got it through this topic. i feel Dmoz is the biggest gift to SEO since google - mainly depends on dmoz and many other large search engines depend on google. and many smaller search engines depend on other llarge search engines, :D

absolutely correct in theory.

I just want to clarify that DMOZ was around long before google, and google started using DMOZ data to build its index.

DMOZ is beneficial to the practice of SEO in most cases. However, their tight guidelines and internal volunteer structure do make it very difficult to stay on top of the growing number of websites. DMOZ does not exist to serve the needs of webmasters/SEOs -their mission is to organize quality information for the end user - you can benefit most from that by creating top quality content sites.

I went through the catergory and found five dead links out of forty in the google directory, yet none in the dmoz. Is there a way to ask google to refresh a catergory?

I'm afraid not. They grab the whole dump (yes, it's really called a dump) or nothing at all.

There was a period earlier this year when the ODP couldn't generate a proper RDF dump, and every directory that relies on them was just stuck without any new data. As I understand it, that's now been fixed and a new dump is made available every couple of weeks, but I've been unable to find any information on how often Google grabs the data from ODP and updates their copy of the directory.

My understanding is that if a web page or site is listed in dmoz - it will improve its importance during a search on google, provided the page is optimized correctly.

I have been having trouble nailing down a certain keyword on google, and I believe if google knew of the pages existence in dmoz it would improve that keywords chances of being identified in a search on google.

Is this correct?

Jill - "when you say a very long time" have you had, perhaps a similar situation?
What were the results? How long did you wait? Did it improve a keywords search result?

The time thing varies. As someone else mentioned, Google wasn't getting the "dump" thingee for quite some time.

And there's no way to measure the results once the listing gets in because there are always tons of other factors that can make the site go up in the rankings. Generally, rankings keep going up over the first 6 months of an optimization because you are continuosly obtaining new links.

I would not put too much time and effort into the one dmoz link. If you've been added, it's out of your control when Google picks it up. Go get other links, and keep making the site better and better. That one listing in Google's directory does not count for much. Everything is cumulative with SEO.
