Split off from this thread

What is the best way to write anchor text for a link?

What is better:

Internet Marketing

Vs.

Internet Marketing, Search Engine Optimization, Online Marketing

How would Google handle 100 links from similar PR5 pages? E.g. 100 that the anchor text is: Internet Marketing

100 where the anchor text is: Internet Marketing, Search Engine Optimization, Online Marketing

Which is better and why?

Your point about anchor text is a good one, gototom.

Shouldn't we start a new topic on that before it gets lost in the flow of this thread??

Hi gototom,
As far as I can tell, you'll get a bigger bump for each of those phrases if you break them up rather than linking a long string of phrases. However, I don't know if there is value in linking to a page using three different anchor links from the same page.

Hi Ed,

Do you know of any examples of evidence of your theory. I have fond that if the keyword phrases are not super competitive than only a small number of external links can raise a web site to the top. I have used longer multiple keyword phrases for many of my clients with excellent results. So I know for sure it will work, I just do not know if it would work as well for highly competitive keyword phrases. I wonder if Google could somehow split the value of long anchor text phrases. Also I wonder how long can anchor text be? Is there a limit? If so what is it? There are many fine points of SEO I never see people comment on. I find tons of SEO 101 and 202 information. I am interested in some of the advanced topics and issues.

I wish I had enough time to really test this all out. That is why I am in this form so I can learn from others knowledge and experience.

In my opinion, there's really no such thing as advanced SEO topics, as they are often techniques which would be considered "spamming" of the engines.

Most of us here purposely don't optimize sites for highly competitive keyword phrases because we have found that you're often competing against tons of spammers.

We've found that if you concentrate on keyword research, and optimize for two and three word phrases that are highly relevant to your business, you may not get as much traffic as a one-word keyword, but you will get much more highly targeted traffic and thus higher conversions to sales rates.

That said, I believe the folks over at WebmasterWorld discuss what you might call "advanced" SEO topics.

Is there a limit? If so what is it?

Search engines are logical and user based not SEO based, always consider this when applying logic to questions such as this.

Imagine now that the weight provided to anchor text was not proportional to the amount of text in the anchor - Rogue spammers would have URLS thousands of characters long, so it would make sense that both proximity and density within an anchor are considered.

Also I am sure G has a stop text limit on anchors although I couldnt site it as they still havent replied to my "tell me all your secrets please" email but its quite easy to program stop text limits into the algo.
