The automatic link created I think is not link farm too since your site will be included only to same category sites.
Plus you get a solo back link from other members site... here is a example...
www.freewebhosting-guide.info/solo-link.php?t=27 - Get solo back link to his site
Now is that considered as link farm?
What I am not so sure is that.. if SE crewl the database result....

The second major distinction is that a link farm doesn't pay attention to optimization. There are many links on any given page, usually so many your link will never get spidered.
The software we have been discussing is a database driven web directory that just happens to only allow link submissions for exchange.
There are a lot differences between the two.
Someone went to the trouble of installing and customizing the scripts that went into that directory, If the directory isn't optimized for search he or she wasted a lot of time.
