Scroll down on that page and you'll see a key that explains what those images represent. Basically, an image with bright colors has new replies since you last looked at it and a dull one does not.

Scottie, I assume you are the brains behind the implementation - this is the *best* implementation I have seen for a forum. Thank you for putting the work into it. It saves me so much time to be able to follow the threads in my RSS reader. Being able to get the entire text of each new post, rather than just a heading, or worse only notice of new threads, is Great!
I wish Invision would adopt it in their default build; I am always disappointed when I look at a forum, try the RSS feed and see that it contains nothing useful (a bunch of headings - what value does that have for me) - this is the only forum I really follow because I find the others all too much work for the payback.

It is a modification I installed- I agree it would be nice to have it in the default, especially since we are on the verge of a major upgrade and the RSS is still a hack, not a feature.
