Hi all,

Would like to know something. Say, I have an AdGroup with the keyword 'blue widget' and another AdGroup with the keyword 'big widget' and both terms are broad matches.

Then if someone searches for 'big blue widget', which one of my ads( associated with the AdGroup) would appear ? The one for big widget or the one for blue widget?

Am a li'l confused here ! Please help !

Thanks,
Matahari

Assuming the ads aren't new (because when they're new they're displayed randomly in order to give them a chance to perform well), I expect the one that came up would be the ad with the best combination of CTR and bid.

Then again, the fact that "blue widget" would have 2 of the searched-on words right next to each other might factor into it as well.

That is a very good question. All I know is that it will only be one or the other. I may have to test this out and see what happens!

Why don't you ask your account rep? I believe they are pretty good about answering questions quickly for AdWords clients.

Good idea, Scottie. I should add (if it wasn't clear in my first post) that what I wrote wasn't merely my opinion -- it was a guess.

Hi Matahari,
I recently received the following answer from a Google rep. as part of an answer to another question:

If you want to to include the same keyword in different ad groups or in
different campaigns, we will show the ad with the higher CPC setting more
often. If the CPC for both keywords in the different ad groups is the
same, our system will automatically show the ad tied to the keyword with
the highest CTR.

Hi Great Dane,

Google had pretty much the same to say to me :

"If your ad has the option to show on two different keywords, or if you
have two of the same keyword in your account we will most likely show the ad with the higher cost-per-click (CPC) setting. "

Thanks everybody :rescue:

If you wanted to make sure you know which add is going to be displayed you could always use negative matches.

For the add group 'blue widget', you could have a negative keyword of '-big' which would force the 'big widget' add to display.
