Google And Web Host Ip Address Check
Posted 27 October 2004 - 02:30 AM
I have a hotel client who is based in Ireland. They have registered a dot com domain and are hosting it in the US. As Google checks the hosting IP it thinks that this site is US based, even though all the content points otherwise, and it will not show in the Google Ireland results. Therefore the client is invisible to its domestic market.
As the client relies on overseas customers it is not willing to move its hosting to Ireland, so can anyone give me any advise as to how best to get the site listed within the country specific Google?

The problem I face is that the client will not move their hosting. Is there any other way around this, like getting Irish only links or something else? Or is it strictly a case of if they don't move they will never be able to be visible to the domestic market?

Bottom line is how much do they care? Care a lot, change the hosting. Don't care, then leave it.

A couple of threads to help you out Adam...
In this one make sure to check out the info in OWG's posting on the first page that contains some good info he got straight from the horse's mouth. (James, were you looking for that one in another post too I think? I just happened to get lucky in my forum search. Maybe we should pin that info somewhere?)
You'll also want to look at the thread Ian started here. Although it is researching Canadian sites, it's still very relevant to what you seek since it's all in how Google performs Geo-Targeting.
Hope that helps!
