Hi all,

In morning I did this and copied to server using ftp and renamed it as .htaccess , was checking some mod_rewrite stuffs.

QUOTE
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^categoriesid([^.]+).* /categories.php?cat_id=$1
[T=application/x-httpd-php]

At that time it was working fine and after few hours when I check my site, it is not opening. So I deleted .htaccess file (still is not opening) , does it take time to reflect the effects or Did I do something wrong?

You suggestion and help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks
Aji

Depends on your host.... some hosts cache stuff so yeah it takes a wee while to update, some dont. It could also be your browser cache maybe?

You cant beat having your own server to make sure its all done proper

rm -f .htaccess smile.gif

Thanks linux_lover,

How can I check whether I have deleted the file properly ?

or is there some possibilty of other errors? I havent done anything apart from this .htaccess which can cause it, all my pages are there in server , I cant see any .htaccess file in my server (also ticked show hide files).

I am waiting to see my site back, should I contact my hosting company now ?

Thanks again
Aji

Hi Aji!

It sounds like you've tried to troubleshoot what's wrong the best that you could. After checking the Knowledge Base and FAQs, I would send a support ticket or contact technical support.

From experience, I've found that once you've spent a reasonable amount of time trying to correct the problem, you need help.

Sometimes, it's a flaw in your reasoning and technical support can help you understand what you did wrong.

In other cases, the problem will never be solved unless you contact your provider.

Recently, my provider blocked my access to the SMTP server for security reasons. I was going crazy trying to figure out what was wrong. When I phoned technical support, the system administrator took the block off and explained to me what triggered it in the first place.

If I hadn't called them, I would still be having problems because they initiated the change and they needed to change it back. I also learned what I did to trigger such a response on their part so that I could avoid a recurrence of this in the future.

Regards,

Stephen :-)

Try reloading a blank .htaccess file, that might get your site working again until you figure out what's wrong with the one you previously uploaded.
