Do Blog Post Links Count?

December 14, 2011

Hello Jill,

I know of you from your SEO videos on I appreciate your teachings and Bloggeradmire your knowledge. I am currently learning about search engine optimization but have a question that I am finding hard to get answered. It's funny, because as I searched Google, High Rankings was #1 for my inquiry and I already knew of you from the Lynda videos!

My question is: Does link popularity take into account blog postings with your link and product information? What kind of weight does that hold?

++Jill's Response++

Hi Sir,

Glad you liked my SEO training course!

Because blog posts are just web pages, links within the posts count toward link popularity just like any other link (presuming that they don't have the nofollow attribute on them). The weight that they hold will be determined by the number of links that point to the page your link is on, and the quality of those links as well.

Hope this helps!

Hi Jill,

I am getting outreach links from wordpress bloggers to increase the PR of a commercial client, but they are not being discovered by seomoz or other tools, will these links eventually help the client's page ranking go up or am i wasting my time?

It doesn't matter what seomoz shows. Unless the links are from spammy sites they generally will pass PageRank.

That said, you shouldn't be getting links to increase PageRank. You should be getting links to increase the exposure of the site, in general. In other words, you only really want links from pages that will bring your site traffic.

Then it doesn't really matter whether or not the links pass PageRank.
